Ashtanga Yoga

Sue in ashtanga yoga poseAshtanga yoga is a wonderful yoga system, characterised by its lovely flowing quality. Its roots are based within Indian Culture and the current teaching of it has been passed on by Pattabhi Jois 'Guriji'.

The term 'ashtanga' means 'eight limbs' and was first mentioned by the Sage Patanjali in about 200 BC. The term 'yoga' means yoking or union of body and mind and this is brought about by the practice of 'asana' or posture which is linked by the 'ujayii' breath which is used throughout.

It is a dynamic system which with regular practice develops strength, flexibility, balance and concentration, releases toxins from the body, and helps re-align the skeleton.

The emphasis is very much on regular practice, where the seeds are sown for those wonderful benefits to grow. In the words of Pattabhi Jois - "Practice, practice and all is coming!" and "It's 99% practice and 1% theory."
